Plot: Kate's family once held much wealth - until her mother married an opium addict who squandered the fortune. But when her mother dies, Kate is suddenly given the opportunity to return to the privileged world - provided she severs all ties with her previous life (including her would-be husband, the muck-raking Merton). She reluctantly agrees - but when she befriends "the world's richest orphan" - a woman who is dying, and also attracted to Merton - she sees a way to attain both lives - but nothing quite works out as well as planned. -- Chris Kavan
