New Movies to Crave: Horrible Bosses Takes On a Zookeeper

Two comedies will attempt to take on the Autobots and Decepticons at the box office, but I have a feeling the giant robots are still going to come out on top.

1) With an outstanding ensemble cast and hoping to ride the R-rated comedy yellow-brick road, Horrible Bosses looks to be the stronger of two new films. Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, Jason Sudeikis, Colin Farrell and Charlie Day come together as a a group of harried workers and their bosses they want to kill for various reasons. From what I've seen of trailers and such, it looks decent enough. It's not one I'm dying to see in theaters, but I will check it out. The track record for R-rated comedies this year has been good - with The Hangover Part II and Bridesmaids both doing spectacular. Even Bad Teacher has managed to do decent. I have a feeling Horrible Bosses should continue the trend.

2) Feel-good family comedies also tend to do better than expected, and that's good news for Kevin James. After Paul Blart managed to somehow make a boatload of money, I bet he's hoping that same audience with support him once again. Plus he has the added benefit of talking animals (voiced by a variety of talent from fellow comedians Adam Sandler and Jon Favreau to gravelly voices of Sylvester Stallone and Nick Nolte). As amusing as this sounds, it's been getting pretty tepid reviews, not that it matters to families seeking entertainment. It will probably do well enough, but it will have to work hard to equal Paul Blart and I just don't think it can do it.

That's really it for this weekend - I still predict Transformers: Dark of the Moon will continue its domination this week, until the juggernaut that is Harry Potter hits next week. I'll be back Sunday to see where the chips fall.
