New Movies to Crave: It's Going to be a Super Weekend

I'm in a good mood today - well, I'll be in an even better mood tomorrow when I finally get to watch my most anticipated movie of the summer (if not the year).

1) I'm talking about Super 8 - from the first time I saw the brief teaser trailer and the name J.J. Abrams (oh, and Steven Spielberg) I was hooked. Each subsequent trailer has only made me further intrigued by what looks like a mix of science fiction homage to the classic B-movie / coming-of-age paired with young romance / 1950s nostalgic small-town drama. Although still early, critical response seems positive, so I'm really hoping this will easily top my list of 2011 films in what has turned out to be a disappointing year (at least for me).

2) Enough about my hopes and dreams - there are other films coming out as well. The aimed-squarely-at-kids film Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer will probably appeal to the right kind of audience - the young kind - but adults may not be as impressed. There's been a pretty solid line of animated films - we'll see if a live-action film can compete at all.

3) Finally, if you like British humor, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon team up for The Trip. I'm actually a fan of Coogan after seeing him in Hamlet 2 (under seen hilarious gem) and his small part in Tropic Thunder. Most people will probably know him from playing the mini-Roman leader in the Night at the Museum films - I'm also a fan of British humor (well, at least of the Monty Python variety) so I bet I will catch this, maybe not in theaters, but I'll keep it in mind for future viewing.

Call me crazy, but I have a feeling Super 8 will dominate the weekend. We'll see how well it does come Sunday night.

I guess you could say I'm waiting for something to blow me away - Super 8 was a step in the right direction. Still, aside from Inception, most of the films that really appealed to me didn't come out until fall (Social Network, True Grit, Black Swan) so, I guess I'm just hoping that some film approaches that same level.

He didn't say this year was worse than last, just that he's been disappointed with the movies that have come out so far this year. And I would have to agree. To your point though, I think movies have/will be better overall this year in comparison to last year's selection.

I also think that X-Men could do well this weekend because many people don't know what the hell Super 8 is about.

Why is this year more disappointing than last year? It seems the tomato reader is positive every week where as last sucked complete ass except for Inception. This year is way better.
