New Movies to Crave: Grit, Gulliver and Fockers

Need to take a break for the holidays? Luckily Hollywood has some new movies in store to spread the holiday cheer and save you from relative overload.

1) True Grit - The Coen Brothers will always get first billing, eve if their latest has been getting mixed reactions. If nothing else, it's worth seeing for newcomer Hailee Steinfeld hold her own against stalwarts Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin and Matt Damon. It looks like the grit in True Grit comes from her and Hollywood has another young star to look forward to.

2) If westerns aren't your style, hopefully you like comedies, because there's a twofer coming at you. First up is the third in the Focker trilogy - Little Fockers. I admit I've only seen the original myself and thought it was OK, but not much more than that. If you're a Ben Stiller fan, it's right up your alley but I will be sitting this one out.

3) If you want a more family-friendly alternative, Jack Black is here to give Gulliver's Travels his own spin. I don't have high hopes for this film finishing very well either, but Black is an acquired taste and I much prefer him supporting rather than leading, but that's a discussion for another day.

4) In limited release are a pair of films: Gwyneth Paltrow turns singing cowboy in Country Strong while Sofia Coppola tackles Hollywood living in Somewhere. If you live in a big enough market test the waters out for me - the Midwest is not a hotbed of limited release activity unfortunately.

I have a lot of movies on my radar, so I'll have to see if I can actually make it to the theaters to watch any of them. Until next time - oh, and enjoy your celebrations, Christmas or otherwise, I can't guarantee I'll blog again until after the weekend.
