Nothing Much for the MPAA Ratings Bulletin, but The Croods: A New Age Makes Waves

By Chris Kavan - 12/02/20 at 11:54 AM CT

While there isn't much to talk about for ratings this week, perhaps the only good news the box office has seen in a long time was the promising opening of The Croods: The New Age, which actually topped the three-day weekend opening of Christopher Nolan's Tenet with $9.7 million and earned $17 million including the early pre-Thanksgiving opening. That is also the best opening since Tenet ($20.2 million) and has been one of the rare bright spots for movie theaters since the pandemic dropped. With a robust $4,391 per-theater average, it may also be one of the few films that have scored actual profits for theaters as well. Thanksgiving weekend has proven to be on the of the most popular and it's funny we're talking about $17 million being good next to the likes of Frozen 2 ($93.6 million) and Ralph Breaks the Internet ($84.8 million) but in these trying times, we'll take what we can get.

Yet aside from Croods 2, the rest of the box office struggled with the rest of the top five not even breaking $2.5 million combined. Freaky added about $800,000 for a new $7 million total. The War with Grandpa continued its strong run, adding $585,000 and topping the $17 million mark. On the international front, Tenet topped $300 million for a new worldwide total of $357.8 million. Theaters better take this bit of good news while it lasts, because I don't see much more in the future.

If you're looking for any major MPAA Ratings news, I'm afraid there's not much this week, but I'll present the list and you can do as you like.
