The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

By Chris Kavan - 06/10/20 at 11:30 AM CT

Another week, another very light updated. At least we have a movie to talk about this time around - Spongebob is coming back to the big screen (for now) and looks to make August a brighter time. Aside from our Sponge on the Run, however, there's not much else to get excited about. Still, I guess as long as the MPAA Rating Board continues to supply them, I'll continue to cover them and we'll see if Tenet does really kick off a new movie season or if we're in for an even longer drought.

In the current climate of so many movies being pushed back, perhaps family films born the biggest brunt with films like Trolls World Tour and Artemis Fowl going directly to VOD or streaming. That said, not all family films are throwing in the towel and The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run looks to still go out in summer style. The film follows the successful Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water which made an impressive $162 million domestic and over $325 million worldwide. Its unique combination of CGI animation and live action might have seemed like a gamble, but audiences were happy to support it. Sponge on the Run actually serves as a prequel to the popular television series, where we find out how Spongebob and Patrick became friends and involves a quest to find Patrick's missing snail, Gary. Plus, it has a live-action Keanu Reeves and Snoop Dogg - what more could you want? Sequels tend to perform under previous films, but movie-starved audiences may elevate this - even if theaters can't be packed. Still, it's all up in the air at this point as it's not a guarantee things will still be back to normal. I'm sure we'll find out more about all that in the coming months. Rated PG for rude humor, some thematic elements, and mild language.
