Gloria Bell and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

When you want more, sometimes you get even less. The MPAA Ratings Board has been squeaking by with one or two decent movies to talk about for the past few weeks, but once again I'm forced to dig deep, because the only film worth discussing isn't even a wide release, but limited. Oh sure, Fantastic Beasts and A Star is Born are getting special treatment for special editions, but they don't technically count as "new" movies, so I'm going to skip over them. Thus, Gloria Bell, about Julianne Moore going through what looks like a female version of a mid-life crisis (though much more free-spirited) is the only thing worth discussing.

So what to make of Gloria Bell? I think Julianne Moore is a fine actress - from big-budget films like Hunger Games to period dramas like The Hours, she has a rather impressive, versatile career. Gloria Bell follows the titular character, a woman in her 50s, who has not lost her free-spirited nature and tours the L.A. nightlife in search of love. I mean, the plot is pretty straight-forward, but something tells me Moore is going to go a bit deeper than party-cougar - and with the likes of Sean Astin, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Michael Cera, John Turturro, Brad Garrett and Rita Wilson along for the ride, it should make for a good time. That being said, this good time looks to be enjoyed by a mostly female crowd and I don't know if the plan is to expand or stick to limited theaters. Rated R for sexuality, nudity, language and some drug use.
