The Beach Bum and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

By Chris Kavan - 12/05/18 at 10:50 AM CT

It's another one of those weeks where the MPAA Ratings Board is really making me stretch to finds something interesting to talk about. There is not a single wide-release film among the bunch, so that's right out the window, so I guess I'll pick the most interesting limited release film, the latest from gonzo director Harmony Korine (with films like Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy and Trash Humpers all under his name), The Beach Bum starring the most laid back actor of our time, one Matthew McConaughey. And that's it - there is absolutely nothing else that interests me in the least. One can hope for better luck next week.

So, here I am, talking about The Beach Bum. Harmony Korine is no stranger to making rather unique films - and critics aren't always on board. But the man has his own style, often involving drugs, bad decisions and decadence. Spring Breakers is probably his most accessible film, and we'll see if Beach Bum continues. There isn't must of a plot breakdown as of yet only that Matthew McConaughey plays the titular Beach Bum (named Moondog - yes, Moondog) and that he lives life by his own rules. And, wouldn't you know it, he has some interesting company including Snoop Dogg playing a dude named Lingerie, Zac Efron as Flicker and Martin Lawrence as a guy named Captain Wack. If those names alone don't sell you on this film, what more can I do? Well, how about we add Isla Fisher, Jonah Hill and Stefania LaVie Owen to the mix. I mean that is a damn, fine solid cast right there. But why do I get the feeling this is going to be like The Big Lebowski on a bad acid trip? In any case, if you need your fix you will have to wait until March of 2019 - and hope the film plays near you. Rated R for pervasive drug and alcohol use, language throughout, nudity and some strong sexual content.

That's all you're getting out of me this week - that MPAA Board better whip itself into shape for next time, but if you are so inclined, please check out the full MPAA Ratings Bulletin below:
