New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave This Week: I Am Iron Man... 2 Plus Killer-Greek-Babies!

Why they wait until the last week in September to unload a torrent of new releases is beyond me, but there is quite a bounty for film lovers of all stripes to enjoy this week.

1) No surprise that leading the pack this week is the action-packed Iron Man 2. No, I don't think it's as good as the original, but it is still a whole lot of fun, plus Scarlett Johansson in tight outfits. If you haven't seen it, it's worth the time, especially if you enjoyed the first one.

2) Comedy fans will like the Russell Brand / Jonah Hill pairing in Get Him to the Greek. A spiritual successor to Forgetting Sarah Marshall, this is a road trip movie through and through and I'm sure everyone learns a valuable lesson in the end - after plenty of laughs, gross-out or otherwise.

3) Those looking for something a bit darker should check out The Killer Inside Me. Looks like this one is a great character piece and gives credence to the term sympathy for the devil. Gives that Casey Affleck a nice, dark place to go.

4) For something a bit lighter, the documentary Babies will practically melt you with cuteness. It may be a bit much for me alone, but couples, especially those with young children, will get the most enjoyment out of this one.

5) Criterion once again delivers with The Thin Red Line. This is not just a war film, but a philosophical journey thanks to the enigmatic director Terrence Malick. Guadalcanal may not be as familiar as D-Day or Pearl Harbor, but it certainly makes for good commentary on the nature of war. Look for a slew of extras as per Criterion: interviews, outtakes and commentary.

On the Blu-Ray front, besides the above-mentioned films, is the original King Kong. Includes two documentaries, plus commentary by Ray Harryhausen on the film and test footage of Kong himself. For those who like classic monster movies, it doesn't get much bigger than Kong.
