Macbeth and More in This Week's MPAA Rating Bulletin

By Chris Kavan - 12/09/15 at 11:42 AM CT

Last week provided us with a veritable avalanche of post-Thanksgiving day updates. Sadly, it seems they ran their course as this week we have one limited release film and absolutely nothing else of note. Some movies might make it in limited release, others will probably go the streaming route - and that means there's not a lot to talk about. Granted, I pretty much have nothing on my mind other than the upcoming Star Wars film, so I guess the somewhat sad offering this week isn't so bad. We'll see if next week brings us a bit more to cheer about.

Pretty much the only film of note is Macbeth. By all accounts this adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy has a lot going for it: big actors (Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, David Thewlis, Paddy Considine and Sean Harris, among others), great costumes and sets and a, of course, the great story about ambition betrayal. One of the greatest tragedies has seem a limited release already and will expand more in the coming weeks. This is the kind of film that will draw a very particular audience, but not one I expect will lead to full nationwide release. This will probably play well to the more arthouse crowd, but I doubt general audiences will embrace it. As it stands, Macbeth lives up to its dark roots, earning an Rated R for strong violence and brief sexuality.
