The most common review of Opus is the correct one: you've seen it before and done better. While I did appreciate John Malkovich as the eccentric pop star who has been in hiding for decades - and even the music was actually well done - the story itself has been told plenty of times in the recent past. Mix in a bit of Jonestown cult activity, celebrity worship and Ayo Edebiri playing the same character she always seems to play and it's entertaining though not terribly original.

A transparent denouncement of celebrity idolotry; a concept that's been done better. The psycho eccentric premise has become so overused in just a few years, but it's not so much a rip off of "The Menu" as it is the type of shallow, self-gratifying piece of art that "The Menu" was attacking.
