Robert Eggers can certainly craft a film and this gothic horror - from the setting to the characters to the cinematography - evokes some powerful imagery. But while I was technically impressed I can help but feel I was also a bit detached from the whole thing myself. Eggers has been impressive none-the-less but I think after witnessing Lily-Rose Depp in The Idol (two episodes was all I could stomach) I am forever tainted in my opinion of her. Willem Dafoe and Bill Skarsgård almost make up for it - as does that final, climactic scene but I still just couldn't connect in the end.

It's been over a century since F. W. Murnau presented the first movie vampire to the world and laid the groundwork for horror movies in the decades to come. But 102 years worth of vampire cinema isn't enough to prepare you for what Robert Eggers has cooked up. His remake is a chilling revision that retains the classic elements of the vampire story while amplifying the virus metaphor and sexual undertones of vampyric lore. It's a contemporary gothic masterpiece complete with suffocating atmosphere and discomfortingly graceful cinematography.
