A fine character study that subverts expectations. B.J. Novak is the New Yorker in over his head when he attends a funeral in Texas for a hookup he barely knew - but whose family thinks the relationship was much more serious. When he learns she may have been murdered rather than the reported drug overdose, he turns it into a podcast but soon learns things aren't cut-and-dried while dealing with some truly unique personalities. A good mystery with comedic elements and some excellent characters - worth your time.

"Vengeance" locks together topical politics and a barbed sense of humor that help give its murder mystery a subversive and well-balanced tone.

B.J. Novak shines as director and star of this quirky mystery-comedy. The humor leans towards dark comedy but there is still heart to the story. Sure it pokes fun at Novak as a fish-out-of-water type character and the Texas characters are the butt of jokes. But Novak directs the movie in a way that both sides learn from each other and empathize with one another. Boyd Holbrook is pretty funny in this and J. Smith-Cameron provides some emotional heft with her performance.
