The flashy presentation and Andra Day's astonishing performance as Lady Day carry "The United States vs. Billie Holiday" as far as possible. Unfortunately, they come up about 30 minutes short, after the stylistic choices have become burdensome and just before the movie breaks apart, muddling any and all take aways in the process.
