One of 2019’s absolutely best movies. Noah Baumbach’s direction held my attention. This could have been a trashy film no better than a Lifetime movie, but it doesn’t rely on melodrama for emotional weight. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson deliver outstanding performances. Both actors did an amazing job conveying the sheer stressfulness and emotional toil their characters experience.

Overrated, slow and dull. A few humorous moments, and an excellent performance from Scarlett Johansson do little to relive the general tedium. Adam Driver gives a wooden performance, and his emotional scenes feel forced. Laura Dern gives the same performance she always gives. If you want to learn in excruciating detail what it’s like to get divorced you will love this movie. Otherwise stay clear.

Deeply observational and deeply affecting, "Marriage Story" is a clear-eyed look at separation and everything that comes with it.
