A mother and two children are forced to undergo a treacherous journey in a post-apocalyptic world stalked by a malevolent presence the sight of which causes hysteria and suicide.

The concept of Bird Box is very similar to that of M. Night Shyamalan misfire The Happening from 10 years previously; namely the premise that an unseen enemy causes the human race to exterminate itself through mass suicide. Bird Box adds to the idea in that the survivors must navigate the world blindfolded to avoid its effects and this makes for some suitably tense scenes as their enemy is not only unseen, but literally must not be seen. The earlier scenes when mass hysteria break out are very well done and the cast of survivors holed up together in desperation is reminiscent of the original Romero zombie …

Open Your Eyes (Actually, Don't - You'll Die)

It's hard not to compare Bird Box to other films (The Happening and The Road are the two most obvious parallels) but where this post-apocalyptic parenthood drama manages to stand out is on the shoulders of the two lead, Sandra Bullock and Trevante Rhodes - along with the two children, Vivien Lyra Blair and Julian Edwards. The concept is interesting - something causes a world-wide wave of suicides and it's brought about by eye contact. Thus blindfolds, black-out windows and other such things must be applied in order to survive. The film features a nice cast mix - even if most are only given the basic development. This includes the likes of John Malkovich, Jacki Weaver, Rosa Salazar, Lil Rel Howery, Sarah Paulson and Danielle Macdonald among others. I do have to say I really enjoyed Tom …

Each year ends with a bang. You’ll have the end-of-year festivities and people party themselves into the new year. But when it’s about movies, this one created an end-of-a-filmyear-bang. Frankly, I didn’t expect too much of it. But maybe my prejudice about Sandra Bullock has something to do with that. I readily admit that I’m not really a fan of this actress. Is it her way of talking? Or her facial expression? No idea. But I have already avoided a lot of films just because of her being in it. But for her acting performance in “Bird Box“, she deserves a standing ovation.
