This film was very interesting, but strange. The character's were mysterious and I never related to them despite the great quality. Annie was the strangest character in the film for me. It was interesting seeing her character play out, but it also made me feel unsure. I never knew what she actually was doing or how she felt. Did she know about it all along, or not? Peter was another character along with Charlie that I found interesting. The dynamics of Charlie's purpose in the film as well as Peter's changing feelings with his involvement in the incidents were chilling. In my opinion, this movie held up to its psychological horror roots, but also I was not a fan of the cult leadership.

With some very good performances, effective themes, and the capability to disturb, "Hereditary" is what good horror looks like.

Ari Aster -- whose short films are amazing; highly recommended -- makes his feature film debut with Hereditary, a remarkably well made family tragedy of nightmarish proportions. Hereditary has the elements of an effective horror film and is chock full of terrifying imagery, but Aster knows to keep the characters and their shattering relationships at the heart of it all. It's a feel-bad horror story that's certain to linger for days and weeks after.

Suspenseful atmosphere wasted on a tedious rehash of older better horror movies.
