His first animated film since "Fantastic Mr. Fox," this fantasy fable proves that Wes Anderson's signature quirks, humor, and eye for artistic detail work even better in stop-motion than they do in live-action.

I loved all the Japan-inspired artwork (especially the still images), but found the dogs less interesting, both visually and in terms of the storyline. In general, I like Wes Anderson better when he tells stories set in the human world, with real actors.

Wes Anderson's wildly ambitious stopmotion film boasts wonderfully detailed animation and a good voice cast. The plot proves unbalanced at times though, juggling a boys own adventure story but also political intrigue and social commentary. Plus the expected Wes Anderson quirks. But its darker tone compared with most American animated movies and highly stylized world make it an interesting alternative to the usual cookie-cutter fare.
