Discomforting doesn't begin to describe "Dead Ringers," a movie from the dankest, darkest depths of the wicked mind of the one and only David Cronenberg.

Subtle, very eerie examination of the mental deterioration between identical twins. Two brilliant minds become strained through questionable medical studies, female relationships, and drug use. The whole conceit is that both start out as bipolar personalities and eventually become part of one whole. They find that neither cannot live without the other. The finale brings about this point in an emotional, somewhat confounding manner that left me a bit cold. There's a constant uneasy mood with a depressing undertone present. Jeremy Irons gives an understated, completely engrossing performance as both twin brothers. That alone is worth the watch.

Dead Ringers is one of Cronenberg's more linear films - a psychological thriller that pits two twin gynecologists against each other. Jeremy Irons gives a haunting portrayal of both brothers and the film doesn't escape without a hint of Cronenberg's trademark visceral symbolism. Weird, but unforgettable.
