"Pineapple Express" was a pleasant surprise, I must say. Now, I didn't walk out of the movie thinking that my life had changed because of it, but the writing was better than almost every single other stoner movie out there. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a pretty high percentage so I decided to watch it. Upon entering the theater, I noticed that the demographics represented were all below the age of 21. That's not what got to me. I was the only person laughing at the subtle nuances of the script. I think that most people who watch it won't find those small little gags in the background or the subtle hits at "the established order," but I was entertained and walked out with a few movie quotes to remember and cherish.

Two-thirds of this movie is almost entirely hilarious, thanks to smart writing, deft casting (especially James Franco) and the wild situatons that abound. Unfortunately, the comedic zeal switches gears and converges into an extended over-the-top action finale and the laughs literally cease. Plus, there's an annoying character that keeps getting seriously injured, yet he won't die. Final Grade: B
