Forceful drama about an ambitious drifter (Newman) trying to climb the social ladder with the help of his latest girlfriend, a fading movie star (Page). Things get complicated when they arrive in his hometown where the city boss (Begley) exiled him for romancing his daughter (Knight). The cast is good, Newman especially as a desperate dreamer.
