The Italian Job (1969) review

A film that focuses on mafia Charlie Croker (Michael Caine). Soundtrack was uplifting, performances solid and cinematography breathtaking. The lack of character build-up, a better antagonist and a cliffhanger conclusions were a few noticeable weaknesses to this action movie with slight humor. Screenplay had some insightful lines like: "It's a very difficult job and the only way to get through it is we all work together as a team." and "Camp Freddie, everyone in the *world* is bent!" It however boasts one of the most clever car chases/heists on wheels as the Mini-Coopers have a life on their own which makes you in awe at its capabilities. Though it may not be that enjoyable for repeat viewings, The original Italian Job shows how mafia, gold heists and cars can be a good mix with dark humor. Admittedly, this critic felt the highlights were the last 30 min. just for its choreography and intelligent maneuvering.
