The Outsiders review

Johnny (Macchio) accidentally kills a member of the Socs, the rival gang of the Greasers. Dallas Winston (Dillon) helps him escape town with Ponyboy Curtis (Howell). Brilliantly scored coupled with solid performances. One gets to see a young Matt Dillon, Emilio Estivez and Tom Cruise in support roles. The plot is somewhat thin and lacks impact from the beginning. It's unfortunate some casts were under utilized such as Diane Lane and Tom Waits. Some noteworthy lines: "Things are rough all over." and "Nothing gold can stay. " If only the screenplay were more engaging. There was clarity as to the reason of the gang wars. A film about teen angst, gang wars, heroism and loosing it when a friend dies. The Outsiders is far from being an American Graffiti, it's still worth viewing because of its important messages, skillful direction and dramatic acting from the then unknown artists. A good effort from the director who wants to emphasize on its moral lessons.
