Sweet Sweetback’s Baaadassss Song – (“starring The Black Community”). Sweetback’s on the lam from some honky cops for murder and crimes against fashion (a crushed velvet suit in the colour gold, your honour). Plenty of 70s-style t&a and an excellent soundtrack from Earth Wind and Fire help things along. The lack of a coherent narrative and a visual aesthetic that makes Clerks look like a Terence Malick film are hindrances, but its landmark status was assured long ago.
