Lake Mungo

I Eagerly Await Lake Mungo: The Return
SIngli6 - wrote on 12/25/20

Twin Pea- Lake Mungo is seeped in creepiness, deriving its scares from the unseen (limitations of its budget). The actors are all tremendous at their craft, never a greater asset than for a work of fiction that endeavours so earnestly to convince you it's hard fact. This earnestness is a strength for the first two thirds of the film, but by the time we reach the third act the narrative experiences a pile up of twists, each of which independently could have closed the story. Forcing these twists together shakes the mockumentary's foundations of realism so violently that it requires quite an effort of will-power not to laugh come the film's oh-so-spooky credits. Despite all this, Lake Mungo is an effective thriller. It falters often, but the film's ultimate, fatalistic twist still hits hard enough through the haze of the third act that you can forgive some failings.
