Captain America: The First Avenger

The Star-Spangled Man with a Good Movie

An enjoyably retro superhero movie with a mildly satirical edge, 'The First Avenger' is a nice addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The cast is very solid, with Evans moulding a relatable and refreshingly idealistic superhero from what could have been a thankless role, Hayley Atwell, in contrast to other Marvel love interest (eyes on you, Portman), displaying quite a bit of personality, Hugo Weaving and Toby Jones being fine villains, and Tucci and Tommy Lee Jones playing serviceable mentors. The weakest link is Sebastian Stan, who serves more as a nice piece of eye candy than an interesting character.

The screenplay is innocuous, but in the best way possible. However, the intelligence of the protagonist's actions in the film's climatic scene is dubious. Still, it's a fun little movie that tells a story even I felt was relatively inspiring.
