Undoubtedly charming and game-changing for the thriller genre, The 39 Steps can never quite elevate itself above the sheer absurdity of its plot. The ending, in particular, contorts the script into a truly unholy abomination of implausible circumstances to facilitate a happy ending for its protagonist.
