The first of the five "psychological westerns" directed by Anthony Mann and starring Jimmy Stewart, Winchester '73 (the name of a rifle) features a neat plot contrivance: the hero follows a badman while the movie follows the ownsership of a rifle.
There's lots of action, some shootin' and chasin', and some kind of sense in there that what you're watching is not just a run-of-the-mill western.
