The Running Man (1987)

Below-standard Schwarzenegger, Dawson is awesome

The Running Man has a rather interesting concept about a blood sport game show in a dystopian society. This film overlooks this for the most part in a fairly standard Schwarzenegger's action movie. In this respect it has some problems as the action just never is that good. The way most of the villains are defeated feel rather uninspired and Schwarzenegger's one liners do not really sore all to well in this one. Schwarzenegger himself gives one of his more lacking turns and was considerably better in Predator from the very same year. There is one huge redeeming feature for the film though and that is due to the performance by Richard Dawson as the main villain of the piece. Dawson is just plain brilliant as the evil game show host who will do anything to get the highest rating. I think a movie just about his character would have been a lot more interesting as Dawson is without a doubt the best part of the film.
