Batman (1989)

Is worse than some will admit.

Here is a film that I think people like more than it deserves because of sequels like Batman and Robin and because it was really the only serious Batman with any merit. I thought that at first but then I thought more and saw that it did not really have any merit whatsoever. The visual design might be better than the later ones but not much else. The action scene all look bad for the same reason Batman cannot move. All he does is look really stupid and run at the bad guys with his arms raised into the air. Another problem is none of the characters are true to the source material or good in a unique way. Batman has no character too him nor do any of the side characters because so much time is spent with the Joker. Commissioner Gorden is just a clumsy cop, Harvey Dent is there for basically no reason and Alfred is played like the lovable servant rather than someone with his own brain like in the new Batman films or in the comic and original cartoon. As for the Joker he just gets too much screen time making it so he does not have the impact villains do when their used in just the right way. Jack Nicholson's overrated portrayal is not that great. He is Jack Nicholson as the Joker opposed to just being the joker, this really is not helped by his constant use of the skin make up. Finally the story has nothing special to it all its just thee Joker doing stuff completely randomly and for no actually effect on anything. Its just a oh look what he is doing next. Also Batman's killing of the bad guys is just odd and not proper at all.
