Splice

Doesn't quite no what direction to go in

It’s unfortunate that Splice is not going to be one of my favorite movies of the year, because honestly, it easily could have been. It could have been but it will not because of some major problems.

The film is about a couple genetic engineers who splice Animal DNA with Humane DNA. Out of this experiment comes Dren. This character, or creature, is where the movie could have succeeded, but instead went in the opposite direction. We are meant to care for dren, to feel sympathy for her. At moments we do. However, this is when we think of her as more of a pet. As far as caring for her like a human, e can never have a true emotional connection with her, as well as care for all the circumstances surrounding the situation. This is because visuals take over. As interesting as the design of the creature is early on, if we are suppose to feel for her, then she should be a more human like creature. In the end, Splice has a hard time finding balance between being an interesting visual-led science-fiction film or a much broader film studying what it is to be human.

Perhaps entertainment could still come out of the film. It’s only because Splice had so much potential that I have to dismiss it like this.
