Michael Myers (Daeg Faerch and Tyler Mane) was always an unstable child, even if his family didn't know about it, and unfortunately they had to find out the hard way when he murdered all but his mother and baby sister. Fifteen years later, Michael decides to break out of a psych ward and eliminate the one person still alive from his haunted past in “Halloween.”

For some reason director Rob Zombie felt the need to make this movie, and I don't know whether he should be scolded for that or praised. He handled the material rather well, showing a side of Michael that needed to be seen in more depth for many years. The problem is that after that the movie becomes nothing more than a scene-by-scene remake of the original “Halloween” with the exception of the last few minutes.

Granted, a lot does change between this and the original, but after the first hour of backstory, it would have been refreshing to at least have the original story modified just a bit as well. The ending is drastically different, but the whole thing wasn't completely necessary.

As stated before, I do think studying the mind of Michael was a good idea. The problem is that the movie ends up way too long in the end. It's also filled with way too many clichés to make it seem like anything other than a color-by-numbers horror film after the halfway point.

One major complaint I must throw in here is that they used the original soundtrack for a lot of the music. It seemed like Zombie was trying to make his own version of the story, so why make it so much like the original? They could have at least given the music an update. It sounds too much like the late 70s music it is, rather than the modern horror music it probably should have been in order to fit the movie.

As you can probably tell, I had trouble writing this review. A part of me wants to say it was terrible, while another part of me wants to say it wasn't that bad. Rob Zombie is not a bad director, but he is a terrible writer. He should probably just stick to music though.
