Carrie (2013)

Uninspired filmmaking and acting

This movie is a good example of everything that is wrong with modern film-making. 1) Hollywood has no new ideas, and relies too much on remakes and sequels. 2) Hollywood is obsessed with pretty actors, to the point of casting them in roles that don't make sense. In the original Carrie, Sissy Spacek is perfect as a homely outcast; adorable Chloe Grace Moretz is not. 3) Contemporary actors seem unable to stray far from a generic vanilla personality. Compare Spacek's portrayal of Carrie in the original film to Moretz's portrayal here. Compare Laurie's portrayal of the mom in the original to Moore's portrayal here. Spacek and Laurie create unique, memorable personalities. Moretz and Moore recite lines. 4) Hollywood is obsessed with o-ver-ed-it-ing. There's a scene between Chris and Tommy, where after making love in his car they have a 65-second conversation. During that conversation, there are 13 edits. That means the average shot length during that conversation is five seconds. Five seconds per shot for a simple conversation between two people. Why? Why can't the camera stay on two people for 65 seconds so we can watch them both? Or, if there has to be some editing, why doesn't it serve a purpose? What is the purpose here of the edits here? Just to bounce back and forth between the two speakers? There is no rhyme or reason to editing these days other than to keep the audience from getting bored. 5) Hollywood doesn't want to take chances, so every shot is functional and nothing more. There's no artistry. Name one good shot from this film. There isn't one. 6) I could go on, but I think that's enough. Where are the great filmmakers? Why is Hollywood so unwilling to take a chance? Why do we keep going to see uninspired garbage?
