In the end, I think it's "California Split" that makes the better buddy film about gambling, addiction, and male loneliness. But the one ace "Mississippi Grind" has on Robert Altman's 70s classic is the effectively layered relationship that develops between Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds.
