Oddball buddy yarn of an Allied POW who makes his great escape from the Nazis with an unusual companion: a fully grown Asian elephant named Lucy. Oliver Reed takes the materiel seriously when needed and smirks at the absurdity when necessary. His onscreen friendship with his pachyderm costar is undeniably heartwarming.
But the movie is unsure whether it’s a farce or not.
