Mamma Mia conquers Hollywood

Having conquered the world with their stage musical, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson have taken on Hollywood with their ABBA inspired story, Mamma Mia! The musical features all the great hits from ABBA including "Dancing Queen", " Money, Money, Money" and the title track "Mamma Mia".

The story is set on a Greek island with a young girl, Sophie, planning her wedding. She is desperate to have her father walk her down the aisle, but unfortunately her mother Donna is unable to tell her who it is. Sophie plays detective with her mother's old diary and discovers that there are three possibilities. She secretly invites all three to the wedding but when they all arrive, chaos ensues as Sophie tries to hide them from her mother whilst trying to figure out which one is her Dad.

The movie is credited from the great direction of Phyllida Lloyd who is able to easily transfer the story from the constrictions of the stage to the big screen. The cast are enthusiastic and energetic during the upbeat numbers as well as sincere during the more dramatic songs.

Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried impress with their singing talents as well as their on-screen chemistry as mother and daughter. Pierce Brosnan provides a great acting performance as one of the possible fathers, but is not so hot with the singing elements.

It doesn't really matter though, the music is enough to keep any audience member dancing in the aisle and shedding the odd tear towards the end.

Mamma Mia is definitely worth seeing on the big screen, and be prepared to hum along, you just won't be able to resist!
