If you watch the 1979 version of "The Lady Vanishes" as a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's classic, you will probably not be able to sit through it. But pretend that the original doesn't exist, and this one provides some slight entertainment.

It's probably one of the most misguided attempts at a comedic mystery-thriller, though. Cybill Shepherd is awful, and her interaction with Elliott Gould is sometimes excruciating. But if you are doing other things, it's not unwatchable.

Personally, I just don't care for that zany, madcap, slapstick humor that inappropiately surrounds the story in this version. It would have to be in better hands than these to succeed for me.

That said, it really wasn't as bad as I'd heard in all the stories about the demise of the great Hammer Films, just something I'd never expect them to produce.
