I Am Legend

"Two out of three ain't bad"

I entered the cinema with no expectations for this film, quickly had my hopes raised and then with the final third had them dashed with a jarring immediacy.
I Am Legend begins somewhat as a meditation on loneliness; Lawrence creates a wonderful mood and an exquisite sense of melancholic emptiness as Will Smith is often seen on screen as cutting a small figure in vast expanse. As Smith begins anthropomorphising everything around him from his dog to shop dummies it becomes apparent that his solitude has begun to have an unhinging effect on his psyche. The film excells when it as at it's most inert; a Hollywood inaction film if you will.
Unfortunately Legend descends into a mass of terribly Computer Generated Zombies all of whom are so patently added in post-production suspension of disbelief is impossible. As soon as the firs generic zombie appears on-screen all of I Am Legend's good work instantly unravels.
As Smith comes more into contact with others the film becomes less and less interesting and, backed into a corner, desends into an ending that has no right to be sellotaped onto the initial two acts.
