The Wolf of Wall Street

Master filmmaker Martin Scorsese has made one of the cockiest films I've ever seen with The Wolf of Wall Street. It's hilarious, and the film knows that - so it takes full advantage of it and delivers some of the most outrageous comedic sequences you can imagine. The enjoyment factor is sky high, as Scorsese blend his wonderful directorial style with Terence Winter's amazingly gutsy, daring, and provocative script, and the insane ensemble cast who bring incredible energy to the picture. It feels like Martin Scorsese wants everything under his belt, being that he's now at an old age and, well, who knows what can happen (God forbid). So with The Wolf of Wall Street, he's made his first straight, legitimate comedy, and he hit a home run. The film is obviously telling the story of horribly unlikable individuals. The stuff presented on screen is crass and tasteless, which is what makes it so brilliant - that Scorsese is able to make such elements so watchable through comedy. As much as you hate these people, you can't take your eyes off of them. The film loses steam toward its end, which is keeping me from giving it 4 stars. Otherwise, it's an easy film to admire. It's easy to take in the craft and the fine performances, especially from DiCaprio in his most outrageous yet. It's easy to laugh with. It's easy to love.
