John Carpenter takes a break from the usual chills and gore to make a heart warming and lightly comic stranger in a strange land sci-fi in which a stranded alien takes the form of Karen Allen's dead husband and seeks her help in reaching his rescuers. Touching, amusing and sensitively directed, it shows he had more than one string to his bow.
