New in Theaters May 17: Star Trek Into Darkness

It's going to be another blockbuster weekend (or so J.J. Abrams hopes) as once again there is only one film opening in wide release. And much like a couple weeks ago, when Iron Man 3 completely dominated the top 10, I'm guessing folks are going to be lined up for the next installment of Star Trek. I have a feeling it's not going to be the massive opening that we saw from Marvel's A-list hero, but it should be good enough to warrant a third movie in the series for sure.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Another thing this Star Trek films shares with Iron Man 3 is it's looking to get a little more serious. All the trailers have pretty much spelled out that Kirk is going to have to make some tough decisions, putting his ship and crew on the line as a villain (Benedict Cumberbatch) seems to be a one-man army bent on the destruction of Earth, Starfleet - and pretty much everything Kirk and crew hold dear. Of course, Kirk takes things personal and goes after him - regardless of the danger it presents. Rumors about Cumberbatch's villain swirled around for ages - and, yes, he indeed does play Khan - and is getting rave reviews for his role. There's also plenty of references to earlier Star Trek episodes and characters - so fans will probably enjoy this more than the casual sci-fi movie-goer. But I have a feeling this is going to be a worthy follow-up to what I thought was an excellent reboot (yes, lens flare and all). There's no doubt in my mind that it will be at the top of the box office - the only question is how much will it make? Iron Man 3 took in $212 million - and Star Trek, with a four-day early opening included, it probably looking closer to $100 million. Marketing has been off the charts, so anything less would be considered pretty disappointing. I'm going this weekend - so it has my vote of confidence.

That's really it for the new wide-release movies. I'm interested to see how Iron Man 3 and Great Gatsby hold up against fierce competition. Come Sunday, I will have the final results.
