DVDs to Crave This Week: She's Out of My Green Zone

By Chris Kavan - 06/22/10 at 10:45 AM CT

A decent week for releases, no matter what you might be in the mood for. Me? I'm always in the mood for some good action (or some terrible horror - usually involving zombies) but I digress, there's only one movie that can be on top, which is why Green Zone is at the top of my list this week. Teaming up Matt Damon with Bourne director Paul Greengrass is recipe for success. While I don't know if it will have the same kick as the Bourne films, it looks like is should be just as enjoyable. You get a slew of features including deleted scenes and a commentary from the director and Damon.

On the comedy front is the Jay Baruchel-helmed She's Out of My League. I've always liked Baruchel - the skinny guy who is always in the background, yet insanely likable. As far as romantic comedies go - you can drag me to this much easier than a Sex and the City 2.

So you say you want to get serious - none of this action or comedy nonsense? Then check out The Last Station. This historical drama follows the life of author Leo Tolstoy and his wife Sofie as he struggles with how he wants to live his life. Big names: Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, James McAvoy - but I'll leave the historical dramas to intellectuals, with a few exceptions, I doubt I'd be anything but bored. It even comes with a couple commentaries - I don't know if that would make it more or less interesting.

On the Blu-Ray front is the release of one of my favorite cult films: Roger Corman's Death Race 2000. The Shout! Factory has been releasing and will release other Corman titles, many that have been out of print for some time, but Death Race 2000 is, to my mind, the cherry on top. Who doesn't like a race where you score points for running over the elderly and construction workers? Plus to get a TON of extra features: Interviews, commentaries (old and new), design and trailers plus a brand-new transfer that shines up real well. If you only see one cult film on Blu-Ray this summer, make it Death Race 2000.

Finally, for those keeping up with the latest technology, one of the first Blu-Ray 3D films is being released: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I have this on my DVR but haven't watched this one yet to know if it would be worthy of 3D or not. I still think Avatar is the only decent film that would be worth having in 3D rather than plain old 2D, but I'm not shelling out major bucks for a new TV for one film. Still, if you like being a trendsetter than by all means, go with it.

Anything on your list that I missed? And yes, I totally ignored Remember Me, but that's because I really don't think it would be anything I would have any interest in. But, as always, opinions are welcome.
