Weekend Box Office: Immortals Cuts Down Jack, Jill & J. Edgar

By Chris Kavan - 11/14/11 at 02:35 AM CT

The debut of Immortals may not quite have been godly, but it was good enough for first place.

With a $32 million opening, Immortals may have fell short of 300 ($70.9) and Clash of the Titans ($61.2) but considering it was released in the fall, and outside of the major studios (Relativity Media released this - also it's best debut) - one could say it was still a good debut. The film also boasted the second-best R-rated 3D film (behind the $50.4 million opening of Jackass 3-D) bolstered by the 66% 3D gross it took. Unsurprisingly the movie skewed mostly male (60%) and young (90% under 35). It should manage to earn back its $75 million budget before it's done.

Adam Sandler ran neck-and-neck with an animated feline for second place. Despite some of the harshest reviews of the year, Jack and Jill currently stands in second with $26 million. While it's the second-worst opening for Sandler (behind the $22.6 million that Funny People took in) and came in below Just Go With It ($30.5 million) the opening still proves that Sandler's films are indeed "critic-proof" as it managed to earn a B score from audiences despite the flat F it garnered from critics.

Just behind, Puss in Boots took another light drop of 23% to come in third with $25.5 million. The Shrek spinoff has now earned nearly $109 million in three weeks and should end up somewhere around $150 million if it continues to perform well and fend off upcoming family films, including The Muppets and Arthur Christmas.

The other new wide-release of the week, J. Edgar, opened in fifth with $11.5 million. The biopic came in just under Hereafter ($12 million) and drew in an audience that was 94% over the age of 25. Critics seemed divided on the film and it remains to be seen whether the talent behind and in front of the camera can deliver come awards time.

Rounding out the top five, Tower Heist took the fourth-place spot with $13.2 million - down 45%. The ensemble comedy has taken in $43.9 million in two weeks.

Passing the $100 million mark along with Puss in Boots this week was Paranormal Activity 3. Although it once again took the biggest hit of the week (down 56.5%) the horror film landed in 8th with $3.6 million and now stands at $100.8 million.

Next week I'm sure all tween eyes will be on The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 - but Happy Feet Two and Oscar contender The Descendents will try their best to make their presence known as well.
