Another week, another super hero to contend with.
1) This time Ryan Reynolds dons the costume of The Green Lantern. Critic response has been less than enthusiastic. It looks like Green Lantern falls into a common trap of style over substance, though Reynolds himself seems to be okay. With a $150 million budget, it's quite a gamble, but then Hangover Part II also suffered scathing critical reviews and it's the highest grossing film of the year. Don't count this one out just yet.
2) I have a feeling the other wide release is going to fall by the way side. Jim Carrey inhertis six penguins and his straight-laced businessman life is turned upside down. Wacky! Well, it will probably do better than Judy Moody but I'm not expecting stellar numbers to come out of this film. I prefer Carrey in somewhat more serious roles, so I think I'll just skip this one.
So you have a bunch of penguins and a shiny, green super hero this week. My advice - go see Super 8 - it's still far and away my favorite movie of the year. If you've seen it already, see it again - maybe with dad. That's my plan anyway.
On Sunday, we'll see if a critical drubbing has an effect on Green Lantern or if Reynold's charm and flashy SFX will mean box office gold.
