Hamilton and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

By Chris Kavan - 05/13/20 at 11:00 AM CT

First off, sorry for skipping last week's update, but I just couldn't get myself worked up over two updated movies, neither of which were anything approaching wide release status. I will include them below with this week's update so you know all the excitement you missed. That being said, this week at least brings on big film - one that is, alas, skipping theaters, but should make a big splash none-the-less. That would be Hamilton, filmed live with the original cast on Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre. Being in Nebraska, I have yet to experience the vastly popular hip-hop musical about founding father Alexander Hamilton, thus I am happy to finally have access to this release.

As I said, Hamilton is not being released in theaters. Disney, however, has a plan. Instead, they are going to release the blockbuster musical on their Disney+ streaming service just in time for Independence Day - July 3rd to be exact - in a move that could very help solidify position and really give Netflix a run for their money. Artemis Fowl is taking the same route and, along with runaway success of The Mandalorian, things are looking good for the streaming service. That is reason enough for Disney to forgo hundreds of millions in theater revanue if they can gain tens of millions of streaming customers. Look, that is trading a one-time ticket for a months-to-years-long customer. In the long-run, that is a much better stream of revanue. It may not be as immediately gratifying, but with parks shut down and theaters still in limbo, it's also the smart move. Rated PG-13 for language and some suggestive
material.
