Angry Birds 2, All Rise and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

Man, I was really excited for this week's update when I saw the first two entries were both new wide releases... then I got to the rest of the update which features nothing else. What a tease, ratings board! Oh well, two up, two down - I guess that's something anyway. We have a sequel to a movie based on a mobile game that was... surprisingly pretty good. But the way sequels are going this year, it could be a total flame out or maybe it will buck the trend and turn out as good as the original. And on the other side of the world, we have a drama about justice or lack thereof, when an honors student finds himself caught up in a murder and must navigate the nightmarish jungle of the legal system to prove his innocence. So there you have it - and now let's get on with the show.

Before Detective Pikachu knocked it down a peg, the second-highest grossing film based on a video game happened to be an animated offering based on a mobile game with a simple premise. But it turns out those Angry Birds make for some compelling, and often hilarious, commentary. And, unsurprisingly, based on the $107.5 million performance, we're getting an Angry Birds Movie 2. The first time around, anger-issue Red (Jason Sudeikis) teamed up with fellow outcasts Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb (Danny McBride) to track down the Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage) in order to thwart an occupation by some mean green piggies. This time around, the birds and pigs find themselves teaming up to take on an icy new foe. Bill Hader returns as the Leonard the pig, while there is a lot of new talent on board including Tiffany Haddish, Awkwafina, Dove Cameron, Sterling K. Brown, Rachel Bloom, Nicki Minaj, Eugenio Derbez, Pete Davidson, Leslie Jones, JoJo Siwa, Brooklynn Prince and Lil Rel Howery. There is a lot of musical talent mixed in with plenty of comedic talent, so I'm not sure if there will be singing birds (or pigs) this time around or not. In any case, the first film was a lot better than I expected it to be given the fact it was based on a frankly super simple mobile game. We'll see if it can break the curse of the sub-par sequels and standout this summer. Rated PG for rude humor and action.

While kids and families will be happy with another animated offering, those who like their movies deep and topical will probably appreciate All Rise, based on the best-selling novel by Walter Dean Myers. The film follows honors student Steve Harmon (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) who finds himself caught up in a robbery that quickly turns homicide. Quickly demonized by the public, and dubbed a monster by the prosecution, he finds himself fighting against a complex legal system and the court of public opinion while trying to prove his innocence. Given how far Black Lives Matter has impacted the nation, this film is coming out at a the right time and should make a pretty big impact with audiences. The film has some high-profile names attacked, including the likes of Jeffrey Wright, Jennifer Hudson, Tim Blake Nelson, Jennifer Ehle, ASAP Rocky, Jonny Coyne, Paul Ben-Victor, Nas and John David Washington. I mean, you have talent here - some new, some more established, but all likely to have an effect on audiences. It's coming out at the right time for awards season so who knows, maybe it will show up on that radar when the time comes. Rated R for language throughout, some violence and bloody images.
