New in Theaters January 18: Glass

The Upside managed to dethrone Aquaman for the top spot at the box office last weekend, but the victory will be short-lived as M. Night Shyamalan is back to complete his trilogy of modern-day superheroes (and villains) with Glass. While I still can't forgive the director for the travesty that was Last Airbender, at least he has found his groove again and I'm looking forward to seeing how this movie ties everything together. Glass should have little trouble topping the box office as January has been mostly quiet.

GLASS I truly enjoyed Split when it came out - not even knowing that it would tie back in to Unbreakable at the end. M. Night Shyamalan is at his best when he fuses horror with a compelling story and to tie Split to my personal favorite Shyamalan film (yes, I think Unbreakable is better than Sixth Sense) was an extra layer of genius. The multiple personalities of one Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy - really giving it his all) is going to come face-to-face with actual superhero David Dunn (Bruce Willis - back again) but the two will soon find themselves in the care of Dr. Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson - a welcome addition to any film or television series as far as I'm concerned), who already has a near-catatonic Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson, also back for more) in her care. The good doctor believes all three are suffering from delusions of harboring any special abilities and seeks to "cure" them. But by bringing Dunn near Price aka Mr. Glass, it awakens him once again and he wants nothing more than to provide his nemesis with a challenge and soon all three are on the run and fighting each other. The film also brings back Anya Taylor-Joy as Crumb's surviving victim from the last film, Charlayne Woodard as Price's mother and Spencer Treat Clark as Dunn's son. Just seeing how these characters (and the actors behind them) interact will be enough for me. If it wraps up this trilogy in a satisfying matter - all the better. McAvoy especially impressed me in Split and I hope he brings that same energy back. This is definitely on my watch list - probably not this weekend, but I will be seeing it next week.

I have no problem saying that Glass is going to top the box office. Even if it falls short of Split, I still think it will be a win for Shyamalan and should have the run for the rest of January. I'll be back on Sunday for a full breakdown of the box office.
