The LEGO Ninjago Movie and More in This Week's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

By Chris Kavan - 08/16/17 at 10:24 AM CT

Well, as the summer box office shows signs of petering out as August winds down, the MPAA board is apparently taking it easy too. Hey, I liked the LEGO Movie - you (probably) liked the LEGO Movie - so now we're getting more! First it was Batman, and now the Ninjago are getting their turn. And it's the only major release this time around, so hopefully it lives up to your expectations. And hopefully next week there will be something more exciting to talk about.

I did truly enjoy The LEGO Movie - it was full of hilarious characters, a subversive kind of story (that kids could enjoy but that adults could very much get into as well) and one hell of an ear worm catchy song. I have yet to see The LEGO Batman Movie - but I loved Will Arnett's part in The LEGO Movie and, based on the trailers and cast, I'm sure I would enjoy that as well. So it's no surprise the LEGO train is chugging right along with The LEGO Ninjago Movie. Now, unlike the previous two films - Ninjago is based on a (I'm guessing) popular TV series that follows the lives of six young ninja that follows the age-old pattern of "normal kids by day - awesome superheros by night" - or, in this case, awesome ninjas by night. Our ninjas are voiced by Dave Franco, Kumail Nanjiani, Michael Peña, Zach Woods,Fred Armisen and Abbi Jacobson with Jackie Chan voicing the wise Sensei Wu with Justin Theroux playing the evil warlord Garmadon and Olivia Munn playing his ex-flame (and mother of Lloyd, our lead ninja and Garmadon's son). Even though this is an existing property, none of the humor seems to be lost - I especially like the live-action cat - so it should make a nice addiction to the LEGO franchise. I'm sure the kids will love it - and the adults will probably have a lot of fun too. Rated PG for some mild action and rude humor.
