FROM THE BIG SCREEN:
Jeff Nichols (just 37 years old) is on a winning streak. His first major film, the apocalyptic "Take Shelter" (2011), starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, about a husband and father who has terrifying visions and channels his fears into building a storm shelter, won tons of awards (including the Critics Week Grand Prize at Cannes), and scored high at Rotten Tomatoes. "Mud" (2012), his second equally quirky outing, starring Matthew
McConaughey, was about two teenage boys who encounter a fugitive and form a pact to help him evade the bounty hunters on his trail. His latest outing, "Midnight Special," is an off-beat sci-fi thriller that follows a father, Roy (Michael Shannon), who goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), a boy with powerful and mysterious powers, from religious extremists -- who practically worship him -- and from local law enforcement agents. The chase quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the federal government, including the National Security Agency. Though not as powerful as his other films -- and slightly reminiscent of Stephen King's "Firestarter" -- "Midnight Special" takes audiences on a thrilling, perilous journey from Texas to Florida, while exploring the bonds of love, trust, and faith. It's absorbing and well-paced from a director who knows what he's doing. Co-stars Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver and Sam Shepard. From Warner.
Also due this week: "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2," a big, fat sequel that stars Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Lainie Kazan, Andrea Martin, Elena Kampouris, Alex Wolff, Rita Wilson, Andrea Martin, Gia Carides and Joey Fatone, and takes advantage of the good will engendered by 2002's original and squanders it on weak gags and situations, from Universal ... "Knight of Cups
," Terrence Malick's latest exploration of human interactions that follows a writer on an odyssey through the playgrounds of Los Angeles and Las Vegas as he undertakes a search for love and self, suffers from a weak script. Stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Brian Dennehy, Antonio Banderas, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palme, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Freida Pinto and Cherry Jones, from Broad Green Pictures ... and "The Brothers Grimsby
," a not-so-edgy comedy from Sacha Baron Cohen about a sweet but dimwitted English football hooligan who reunites with his long-lost brother Sebastian (Mark Strong), a deadly MI6 agent, to prevent a massive global terror attack. Co-stars Rebel Wilson, Isla Fisher, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Scott Adkins and Gabourey Sidibe. From Sony.
THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
"Fantastic Planet
Laloux’s animated marvel, a politically minded and visually inventive work of science fiction. The film is set on a distant planet called Ygam, where enslaved humans (Oms) are the playthings of giant blue natives (Draags). After Terr, kept as a pet since infancy, escapes from his gigantic child captor, he is swept up by a band of radical fellow Oms who are resisting the Draags' oppression and violence. With its eerie, coolly surreal cutout animation by Roland Topor; brilliant psychedelic jazz score by Alain Goraguer; and wondrous creatures and landscapes, this Cannes-awarded 1973 counterculture classic is a perennially compelling statement against conformity and violence. On DVD and Blu-ray, in a new, restored 4K digital transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray. From The Criterion Collection.BUZZIN' THE 'B'S:
