The 33, Pan and More in Today's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

It's not the most exciting update of the year, but at least a couple big films are getting their ratings - The 33, the film based on the true-life story of a group of Chilean miners who become trapped for 69 following a collapse in their mine and Pan - a prequel of sorts that shows how an orphan boy who finds himself in the magical land known as Neverland turns into the classic hero and boy who would never grow up. Otherwise it's a bit quiet, but hopefully as we get closer to the awards season, we'll get some meatier updates.

In terms of drama, you can't find a story that is much more personal or inspirational than The 33. It's one of those stories that grabbed your attention and though the real story may have played out a continent away, you couldn't help but be touched by the story. Now we have a drama based on what happened in that mine for the 69 days a group of 33 men were trapped. And they have tapped some big names: Antonio Banderas, Rodrigo Santoro, Juliette Binoche, Gabriel Byrne, Lou Diamond Phillips, Cote de Pablo and James Brolin among them. As long as the film doesn't get overly sentimental, it could easily be an awards contender (voting members love a good true-life story of hope). The film scores a PG-13 for a disaster sequence and some language. Let's hope it's hard hitting enough to make an impact on audiences.

On a lighter side we have Pan - directed by Joe Wright (known more for period dramas like Atonement and Pride & Prejudice but no stranger to action with Hanna), the film is kind of prequel to the Peter Pan we all know - taking place before the boy becomes, well, an ageless boy. There was some contention when Rooney Mara was cast as Tiger Lily, but white-washing aside the cast looks decent with Hugh Jackman playing pirate Blackbeard and Garrett Hedlund as Hook (not quite captain yet). Amanda Seyfried is Mary, Levi Miller is Peter and Nonso Anozie is Bishop. The film gets a PG for fantasy action violence, language and some thematic material. It's coming out early October - not exactly a prime spot for family films, but with little competition we'll see if Pan still has the magic to ignite audiences.
